Government Relations Consultant

About the Role

We are seeking a sharp, well-connected, and analytically minded Government Relations Consultant to join our public affairs practice. This role is ideal for someone with at least three years of experience in government relations or public service – whether in a federal or provincial capacity – who is ready to step into a consulting role that requires both strategic thinking and tactical execution.

Based in Ottawa, the successful candidate will be responsible for supporting client-facing files focused on issues management, government and stakeholder engagement, and campaign strategy. The role also includes policy and data analysis, and offers opportunities to contribute to public-facing communications, media relations, and integrated campaigns.

 

Core Responsibilities

Government Relations

  • Support and execute strategic government relations plans for a range of clients in the nonprofit, corporate, and public sectors.
  • Monitor parliamentary and legislative activity, political developments, and policy shifts at the federal and provincial levels.
  • Prepare briefing notes, advocacy strategies, political stakeholder maps, and legislative risk assessments.
  • Coordinate and participate in meetings with elected officials, political staff, and public servants.
  • Track and document engagement, deliverables, and outcomes for client reporting.

Public Policy & Research

  • Conduct policy research and synthesize findings into actionable insights.
  • Draft backgrounders, issue briefs, and regulatory summaries that support GR objectives.
  • Analyze data, legislative trends, and political environments relevant to client sectors.

Strategic Communications

  • Contribute to earned media strategies, talking points, and media outreach.
  • Support message development aligned with policy positions or public advocacy campaigns.
  • Collaborate with communications staff on cross-functional initiatives, where relevant.

 

Must-Have Experience:

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in government relations, public service (MP/MPP offices, ministries, political campaigns), or as a policy advisor.
  • Deep understanding of how government works — legislative, regulatory, and political landscapes — particularly at the federal level (provincial experience also welcome).
  • Proven ability to write clearly and concisely under tight timelines.
  • Demonstrated analytical and research skills related to public policy and political environments.

 

Nice-to-Have Experience:

  • Exposure to public relations, media relations, or digital communications strategy.
  • Experience managing stakeholder engagement or coalition-building.
  • Bilingualism (French/English) is a strong asset.

  • Politically attuned, detail-oriented, and strategically minded.
  • Able to manage multiple projects, client needs, and shifting priorities.
  • Collaborative, solutions-driven, and able to thrive in fast-paced consulting environments.

 

Location & Travel

The role is based in Ottawa and preference will be given to candidates who are already located in the National Capital Region. Occasional travel within Canada may be required.
